Jalandhar: In yet another instance of misdemeanour by school children, five students of the premier APJ School, all aged between 15 and 16 years, have been severely reprimanded by the police and asked to undergo counselling after they were found guilty of sending obscene SMSes to the wife of an NRI who is on a visit to his hometown.

The drama started about 15 days ago when NRI Darbara Singh contacted the boys, who had been sending objectionable material to his wife through their mobile phones, and asked them to stop the harassment. But instead of relenting, the boys began intimidating the couple and threatening them with dire consequences if they took up the matter with authorities.

It was only after the calls continued that Darbara contacted the police who on Sunday traced three of the students and detained them. Two of their friends, on the run came to know of the police action, and surrendered on Monday. No case has been registered though as both Darbara and the police are keeping in mind the age of the offenders.

During investigation, the students admitted they had made angry calls to Darbara and sent messages to his wife.

SHO Vibhor Kumar said the counselling session would take place in front of the boys families because the “aim is to help them become responsible citizens’’. As all the boys belong to rich families, some prominent citizens have pitched in to say the students should be given another chance.
