If Time magazine can make the âprotesterâ its person of the year, can the â common manâ get the Bharat Ratna? The sentiment in Twitterverse seems to be in favour of the proposition. â Every common man deserves a Bharat Ratna,â said a tweeter, â for what we brave every single day from corruption, traffic, inflation to pollution.â Of course, the clamour was growing for a Bharat Ratna for Sachin Tendulkar, now that the government has modified the criteria for the highest civilian award to allow sportspersons. The handle # BharatRatna was trending on Twitter this weekend and most TV news channels had come up with their lists of who deserved the award. Twitter had two clear favourites â Tendulkar and the hockey legend, Major Dhyan Chand.
Dhyan Chand seemed to be the unanimous choice and there were some uncharitable remarks directed at him.
Sample this: âI think Bharat Ratna must be given in each category like the Nobel Prize. Sachin has done nothing for society to get Bharat Ratna.â You may disagree but the tweeter has a point.
Of course, smart alecks had a field day taking potshots at politicians. âBharat Ratna is now open for sports … Hope people wonât recommend Sharad Pawarâs name for winning the World Cup instead of Tendulkar,â said one. Said another: â Diggy should be given Bharat Ratna ( at least fake one) for his exemplary coaching service to the # idiotprince. This might boost his morale!â And there was one tweeter who seemed to be fed up of the constant adjournments of Parliament. â If sports is included in Bharat Ratna, politicians stand a chance! They play kabaddi in Parliament.â # BharatRatna was serious stuff, but Katrina Kaifâs item number for Karan Joharâs Agneepath remake has also set the microblogging site on fire, though many were confused why # Chikni Chameli was trending.
An inspired techie tweeted: âMunni badnaam hui, Sheila ki jawani and now Chikni Chameli … well, we indians canât produce iPod or iPhone right … but definitely iTems!!â But there are tweeters who arenât impressed with Katâs moves. â Chikni Chameli is not a patch on Munni or Sheila. The melody is poor & lyrics are lost in Katrinaâs enthusiastic gyration. Looks exhausting.â You must give it to her. Kat does get people talking.
