When the country is in total chaos following the series of bomb blasts, terrorists continue to mastermind more bloodbath from within the safety of prison walls; Deccan Post takes a look at whatâs going on behind bars
At a time when major metros in the country are reeling under abject fear of a possible terror attack and police and intelligence agencies are having a crack at fighting terror modules across the country, terrorists continue to carry out their nefarious activities from the safety of prisons.
Making a mockery of intelligence agencies and security forces, the terrorists are able to keep in touch with the members of their outfits, including those imprisoned in other jails in different parts of the country, reveal documents available with Deccan Post.
Some of these terrorists are using mobile phones within the fortified walls of the prison, with the authorities preferring to turn a blind eye.
Terrorists are also resorting to religious conversions inside the prison, something that used to happen in Indian prisons during the British rule with the support of the colonial rulers. But the prison authorities in Independent India seem to have no interest in preventing the malicious activities of terrorists lodged in various prisons.
The terrorists made these shocking disclosures to their interrogators. Take the case of Mujeeb Ahmed, who was convicted for killing an IPS officer Krishna Prasad, but was granted remission with the help of a local political party and a quasi-judicial body that deals with personal law.
But, as soon as he was released in 2004, Mujeeb established contact with Hizbul Mujahideen and tried to smuggle assault rifles and RDX to Hyderabad. But the counter-terrorist agencies could foil the attempt and arrested Mujeeb in December 2005.
In his confession statement, Mujeeb told the investigators that while serving prison term he used to keep in touch with a human rights activist in the city. It is also suspected some prominent persons known for their naxalite connections had extended their support to him.
What comes as a shocking revelation from Mujeeb is that he was in touch with one Ayesha, sister of another terrorist Asgar Ali and handed her a mobile phone and a SIM card with instructions to hand over the same to her brother. Asgar Ali has been arrested in 2003 and convicted for the killing of Haren Pandya, former home minister of Gujarat. But Mujeeb’s confessions make it clear that Asgar Ali has been able to use a mobile phone inside the Ahmedabad prison and he was in touch with “his friends from the other world.”
And now, sources told Deccan Post that Mujeeb is using a mobile phone inside the fortified walls of Charlapalli prison. His phone is also being used by other prisoners including Maoist inmates. A mobile phone was also recovered from a bathroom of the prisoners’ barracks at the Charlapalli prison a couple of weeks ago.
Another document available with Deccan Post indicates that the terrorists are resorting to religious conversions in the prison. Mohammed Abdul Sattar, who was arrested by the city police in June 2007, disclosed to the investigators that he had converted three Hindu prisoners into Islam. Is it a marriage between terror and religion?
Take the case of Safdar Nagori, the chief of Indian Mujahideen. He was arrested by the Madhya Pradesh police in March this year. He also disclosed many things during the narco analysis which show how the Indian intelligence and counter-terrorism agencies are just sleeping.
Safdar Nagori disclosed the names of the masterminds of Jaipur and Ahmedabad blasts months before they were actually triggered. Though Madhya Pradesh is a BJP ruled State, the cops did not bother to share the inputs with their counterparts in Jaipur and Ahmedabad. Had they acted in time, the blasts at these two places could have been prevented, police sources pointed out.
Safdar Nagori told the investigators that he was in touch with all the operatives across the country even from the prison. His couriers, who used to meet him in the garb of relatives and friends, relayed his plans to the Indian Mujahideen members operating in various parts of the country. Thus, he carried out the blasts while being in jail, sources said.
The shocking disclosures by the terrorists make it clear that there is hardly any coordination and information sharing between the intelligence and counter terrorism agencies of different States. Besides, the rulers in each State have their own political interests and the interest of the nation appears to be their least priority.
Former IPS officer Ved Marwah, who had played a vital role as the Delhi Police Commissioner in containing terrorism in Punjab, has gone on record that security forces are demoralised by the politicians for their selfish interests. They prevent the security forces from acting against the terrorists, he told a news channel recently.
And the slackness of both political leaders and police administration proved disastrous again in the form of September 13 blasts in Delhi. The blasts killed as many as 30 innocent people and injured over 90.
