Fact Sheet: ‘Marry me please, Sania’

A Bangalore-based engineer created a tension of sorts to Hyderabadi tennis sensation Sania Mirza, just two days before her engagement to her childhood friend Sohrab Mirza.

The engineer, Mohd Ashraf, went to Sania’s residence at Banjara Hills after 12.30 in the night and disturbed the sleep of Sania and her family members. The boy, along with his friend Debashis Mohanty, told Sania’s parents that he was in deep love with her and demanded that her engagement be cancelled. Ashraf entered into argument with Sania’s father Imran Mirza, stating that he had fallen in love with Sania, when she came to Bangalore to participate in a tennis tournament a couple of years ago. He claimed that he had also sent a number of SMSs and made calls to Sania, asking her to cancel the engagement.

Imran lodged a complaint with the Banjara Hills police, who took him into custody and booked nuisance case against him. On the request of Sania’s parents, the police had put up a police picket at her residence.
