HYDERABAD: With Intermediate practicals slated in February, teachers have embarked on a unique ‘teaching tour’ to cover portions in colleges where there is shortage of staff. Around 3,300 teachers from different colleges are participating in the perambulation of the college circuit.

Over 1,500 vacancies are yet to be filled in government junior colleges. Some of these vacancies were created recently as some teachers were transferred as part of the Six-Point Formula.

“Students have benefited a lot from the programme as teachers have made it a point to cover all colleges where there is staff shortage. Some teachers have travelled long distances criss-crossing districts to teach students from other colleges,” director of collegiate education Dr K Lakshmi Narayana told ‘TOI’. The sharing of faculty concept is part of the District Resource Centre (DRC) which began in November last year.

For proper functioning of schools, a budget of Rs 80 lakh was allotted by the director. This was meant to cover travelling allowances and an extra amount for teaching. The colleges have also generated their own funds for incidental expenses.

The teachers concentrate on English, mathematics and physics as these are crucial subjects.

Some colleges have even put up links on their websites giving details of the trips made by teachers and the number of hours spent. Some colleges were lucky to get over 100 hours of teaching from these roving teachers.

“The coordination is done between all colleges in the district through the District Knowledge Centre which coordinate with other similar centres if necessary,” Lakshminarayana said.

In many cases, the teachers are also pooling notes on all the subjects and sharing it through e-mail. Even after the teaching sessions are over, the teachers clear doubts of students via the e-mail.
