The current job market is facing one of its toughest periods since the Covid-19 pandemic, and even highly experienced professionals are finding it difficult to secure work.
Edward Whitehead, a software developer based in South Africa’s Western Cape, recently shared that he had been unemployed for nearly a year despite having more than 20 years of experience in the technology industry.
In a LinkedIn post that has since gone viral, Whitehead said he had tried several job-search strategies but had not been able to secure even a short-term contract.
“It has been almost 12 months since I was laid off, and I have not secured a single job, not even a short-term contract,” he wrote.
Whitehead said the long period of unemployment had taken an emotional toll on him. However, he added that the support of his wife and children had helped him continue trying.
“There are days when I feel like giving up. Then I look at my two beautiful children and my incredibly supportive wife, and I am reminded why I cannot,” he said.
The experienced tech professional said he had changed his resume, tried different application strategies, approached people in his network and contacted companies directly. Despite these efforts, the results remained the same.
“At times, it feels like I am banging my head against a wall, hoping for a different outcome,” he wrote.
While continuing his job search, Whitehead has also been working on two software products in the hope of creating an independent source of income.
“Maybe, just maybe, one of them will become the opportunity that changes everything,” he said.
He also encouraged other unemployed professionals to keep trying, even during difficult periods.
“Keep believing that the right opportunity is out there. Keep showing up, even on the days when it is hard,” he wrote.
Whitehead used the post to seek leads from companies looking for professionals with experience in software development, technical leadership, product delivery and technology consulting.
The post received widespread attention, with many users sharing similar experiences.
One user said they had recently been laid off and had been searching for work for several months without success.
Others said extensive experience, which was once considered a major advantage, now sometimes appeared to work against senior professionals in the job market.
Several users questioned why companies were overlooking candidates with decades of proven experience at a time when experienced talent should be highly valued.
