An Indian-origin doctor in the United States has been sentenced to six months in prison for secretly recording hospital employees inside a staff restroom.
Advait Deshmukh was also sentenced to three years of probation after pleading guilty to one count of attempted tampering with evidence and seven counts of voyeurism, according to court records.
The sentencing terms also require him to register as a sex offender for 15 years, attend Sexaholics Anonymous meetings and continue mental health and sex offender treatment.
Deshmukh will remain on active adult probation until June 2029. The judge said he had informed the court that he planned to move to Franklin County, where he would be required to continue treatment and complete the registration process.
The case began in June 2025 after an employee found a mobile phone hidden inside a unisex restroom at ProMedica Toledo Hospital in Ohio.
When a witness tried to remove the device, Deshmukh allegedly took it away and claimed that it belonged to him.
A joint investigation by Toledo Police and ProMedica later found more than 80 images on the phone, reportedly taken between February and May 2025.
Investigators identified six victims who had not consented to being recorded. Police suspect there may be more victims, with evidence suggesting that similar recordings could date back to 2018.
At the time the offence was discovered, Deshmukh was a third-year medical resident at the University of Toledo, specialising in endourology and urologic oncology.
Following an internal investigation, the university placed him on administrative leave and later decided not to renew his residency appointment.
Deshmukh reportedly apologised to the victims before sentencing.
His lawyer had requested probation instead of imprisonment, arguing that the former doctor was undergoing therapy to understand the behaviour that led to the offences.
