Recently, several videos have surfaced in which random people, in the name of “social media journalists,” are approaching the homes of Telugu people and demanding access to files or personal information.
They are questioning individuals about their H-1B or immigration status as if they are official U.S. government authorities.
Unfortunately, some Telugu people are engaging in lengthy arguments and heated conversations with them, which is completely unnecessary.
While responding to them may not always create direct legal problems if everything is legally correct, it can unnecessarily invite racial targeting and unwanted trouble.
A Telugu lawyer advised, “If random people come to your home asking questions, the safest approach is to remain calm, avoid arguments and simply refuse to engage. Do not try to act like heroes by confronting them. Legally, you may be absolutely correct, but arguments made in frustration or anger can lead to the wrong words being used.”
He further advised, “You can politely say that you are busy and do not wish to speak. That itself ends the matter.”
He also added, “If needed, you may simply tell them to approach the proper authorities and that you will respond directly to official agencies if required.”

Arguing with such people will not solve any issue. More importantly, using abusive language or losing control on camera, especially as an H-1B visa holder or green card holder, can send the wrong message and attract unnecessary attention from hostile or racist citizen groups.
Many such social media channels are driven mainly by the hunger for popularity, views and online attention. Do not fall prey to such provocations.
Staying calm, respectful and cautious is always the wiser approach.
