Meta laid off nearly 8,000 employees earlier this month as part of its latest round of workforce reduction.
The layoffs reportedly began in Singapore, where emails were sent to affected employees at 4 am local time. Along with the job cuts, the social media giant has also said it plans to move more than 7,000 employees to new initiatives focused on artificial intelligence.
In a memo sent to impacted employees, Meta acknowledged the additional uncertainty faced by visa-sponsored workers and shared immigration-related guidance to help them deal with the situation.
The company directed affected employees to its Alumni Portal, where they can access legal support details and raise case-specific questions.
What Meta Told H-1B Employees
In the memo, Meta said: “We know this is especially difficult for those whose visa and work authorization is sponsored by Meta. The Alumni Portal has general immigration guidance to help address your immediate questions.”
According to the memo, the portal also includes contact details of the law firm assigned to affected employees.
“The guidance also contains the contact information for your assigned law firm,” the company said.
Meta also told employees that they can open a case through the Alumni Portal if they have specific questions about their individual situation.
Severance Package For Laid-Off Employees
As per the memo, a regular full-time employee affected by the latest layoffs will be eligible for a severance package that includes 16 weeks of pay, plus two additional weeks for every completed year of service, minus the notice period.
The company also said it will cover COBRA health insurance premiums for the employee and eligible family dependents for 18 months.
Meta made it clear that employees must sign a Separation Agreement to receive the severance payout. Those who do not receive the agreement have been asked to submit a case through the Alumni Portal.
