Quit Jobs, Sold Pickles, Built an Rs 81 Crore Startup!

Two Gen Z friends in the US turned their love for pickles into a fast-growing food startup that is now valued at around Rs 81 crore.

Leah Marcus and Yasaman Bakhtiar launched Good Girl Snacks two years ago after quitting their jobs and deciding to build a brand around an everyday product.

The Los Angeles-based startup has raised $3 million in seed funding at a valuation of $8.5 million, according to a CNBC report.

The company launched its “Hot Girl Pickles” brand in February 2024 after the founders began sharing pickle-related content on TikTok.

What started as an online business later expanded into major US retail stores, including Whole Foods Market and Erewhon.

Branding Built Around a Mindset

Good Girl Snacks has created a distinctive identity by using names that reflect a certain attitude or mood rather than a physical appearance.

According to the company, names such as “Good Girl Snacks” and “Hot Girl Pickles” are inspired by popular social-media trends like “hot girl walks” and “girl dinners”.

The idea is to use the word “girl” as an expression of confidence, energy and everyday fun.

The company combines playful branding, colourful visuals and social-media culture to make a simple product like pickles stand out in a crowded market.

It has already built a strong digital following, with more than 1.8 lakh followers across social media platforms.

Many younger consumers have responded positively to the brand’s casual and humorous style.

According to CNBC, Marcus, 26, and Bakhtiar, 27, started sending each other TikTok videos about pickles almost every day in 2023. Their shared interest eventually developed into a business idea.

Marcus said the brand does not take itself too seriously and often uses self-deprecating humour on social media.

She also said the company tries things that are not usually seen in the traditional pickle category.

Despite its growing popularity and recent funding round, Good Girl Snacks has not publicly disclosed details about its revenue or profitability.

Still, the startup’s rise shows how strong branding, social-media culture and a simple product can come together to create a business with significant investor interest.
