Wipro has said its new AI systems have created productivity equal to the work of around 20,000 employees.
The company clarified that this does not mean 20,000 workers lost their jobs. Instead, the saved work capacity is being used for other tasks.
The development has raised fresh concerns about jobs in India. Many workers fear that AI could reduce the need for human employees.
The biggest worry may not be mass layoffs. It could be fewer new jobs, especially for fresh graduates entering the IT industry.
India’s major IT companies are already investing heavily in AI. TCS has reported a large number of employees with AI and machine-learning skills.
Infosys is also working on thousands of AI projects. AI agents are now handling parts of work under human supervision.
However, AI may not only destroy jobs. It can also create new industries and new types of work.
The shift from horses to automobiles offers a similar example. Some old jobs disappeared, but many new businesses and professions emerged around automobiles.
The bigger challenge is helping workers adjust quickly. Some jobs may disappear, while others will change or emerge.
For Indian IT workers, learning new skills and understanding AI could become increasingly important. The future may depend less on resisting AI and more on adapting to it.
