Elon Musk may now be the world’s first trillionaire, but his home is reportedly smaller than many city apartments.
Musk crossed the historic $1 trillion wealth mark after SpaceX’s blockbuster stock market debut. The company was valued at around $1.77 trillion, while its shares jumped sharply after listing.
Despite his massive fortune, Musk has said that his main residence is a tiny prefabricated house near SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Texas.
The 400-square-foot home is reportedly worth about $50,000 and measures just 20 feet by 20 feet. Musk rents it from SpaceX.
The compact house has a living area, bedroom space, kitchen and bathroom. Musk once described it as “kinda awesome.”
He moved to Texas in 2020 and sold most of his luxury properties in California. Though companies linked to him reportedly own bigger homes near Austin, Musk maintains that the small Starbase property is his primary residence.
His mother, Maye Musk, also revealed the basic conditions inside the home, saying there was no food in the fridge and that she once slept in the garage.
Supporters say Musk’s simple lifestyle proves he does not flaunt his wealth. Critics, however, argue that the modest-home image does not show the complete picture.
Either way, the contrast is striking: a trillion-dollar fortune and a 400-square-foot home.
