The stories about molestation and rape are now the staple fare everywhere – TV as well as the print media. The stories of molestation and rape are now being carried with alarming regularity in the media. The stories are also being hyped up to embarrassing levels.

The channels and newspapers are going overboard with their coverage of such incidents. While the TV channels keep telecasting the stories again and again, the print media also blows them up with big headlines on page one.

The story about two girls being molested by about 100 odd people on the New Year eve is just one example. The two girls were molested outside the JW Marriott hotel in Mumbai on the night of 31 December.

The media went to town over it and played up the story day in and day out. The excessive coverage left a bad taste in the mouth of the viewers.

The media, especially electronic media is resorting to such sensationalism only with an idea of raising its TRP ratings. The print media is also following a similar approach in its bid to boost up circulation.

The girls blame it on the youth. They say that just by wearing tops that allow for a good cleavage show and wearing low hip jeans, they are not provoking anyone. The men are behaving like animals say the girls.

The girls say that even the girls working at call centers that are traveling to work in cabs are being attacked by the cab drivers. They are all very formally dressed, even then the attacks are continuing.

The girls bemoan that the country is now in need of a stricter regime to rein in the attacks on women. A Taliban type of government is the only answer to this menace, feel some women.  Women are vulnerable everywhere. Diagnostic centers, beauty parlors, Internet cafes – they are all the time under scrutiny and secret cameras are being used to catch them in compromising positions.
