The film industry is now a colossus. But it was not a smooth sailing in the initial stages. It was stage plays that dominated the scene for decades.
It is a fact that the film shows a larger than life image of the actor and television shows a smaller than life image. It is only the stage that shows people as they are.
The Telugu people patronized stage performance in a big way before the entry of cinema. Even after the entry of cinema, in the initial days, we only had ‘silent’ or ‘mookie’ films.
So it was very difficult to get the audience to the theatres. The silent movies did not attract the audience first. It took a lot of time and persuasion, almost 15 years for people to give up theatre and patronize films in a big away.
Now the people are completely addicted to movies and television. It is being said that stage plays would once again regain their lost glory. But it does not seem to be a realistic idea nor is it achievable. Not just in the short term but also in the long term. It is hard t pull people from cinema to stage dramas.
