Can Varanasi Recover Its Massive Investment?

S.S. Rajamouli and Mahesh Babu’s Varanasi is shaping up to be one of the biggest financial bets in Indian cinema.

Sources have placed the film’s budget at around Rs 1,200 crore, including major production expenses and remunerations.

However, promotional and marketing costs are expected to be separate, which means the final landing cost could be considerably higher.

That makes the film’s box office performance particularly important. The key question is how much Varanasi needs to earn to justify such a massive investment.

For a project of this scale, its worldwide gross may need to approach roughly twice the investment to reach a comfortable break-even point, depending on distributor deals, theatrical shares and territory-wise economics.

Non-theatrical rights such as streaming, satellite and audio can provide an additional cushion. However, those markets are no longer as aggressive or inflated as they were during the peak post-pandemic streaming boom.

The film nevertheless has several advantages. Rajamouli comes with the enormous goodwill of Baahubali and RRR, while Mahesh Babu has a strong domestic and overseas following. Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran add further star power and international visibility.

Varanasi is currently scheduled for a summer 2027 release, positioning it for a potentially lucrative theatrical window.

But the enormous scale also creates enormous expectations. A Rs 1,200-crore-plus investment leaves very little room for underperformance.

The film will need exceptional word of mouth, strong repeat audiences and major international collections to make the numbers work.

Ultimately, Varanasi is not merely another big-budget Indian film. It is a massive financial gamble, and its success or failure could become a significant indicator of how far the economics of event cinema can stretch.
