It is widely believed that Janhvi Kapoor, despite appearing in Devara and Peddi, did not receive the recognition she expected in the South.
While her role in Devara was considered too limited to make an impact, her character in Peddi has reportedly drawn criticism, including from Bollywood circles.
Following the film's release, Janhvi stayed away from promotions and has remained silent on social media, leading to speculation that she was unhappy with several aspects surrounding the project.
The episode is said to have influenced the perception of several Bollywood heroines regarding Tollywood.
"B-town heroines are unwilling to sign for Telugu films after what Janhvi has been facing with Peddi", is what a Bollywood source told.
There is a feeling in some circles that Telugu commercial films often prioritize glamorous presentation over well-developed female characters, leaving actresses with little scope to showcase their acting abilities.
Critics have also long argued that certain filmmakers focus excessively on glamour-oriented presentation with 'navel shows', reinforcing stereotypes instead of creating meaningful roles.
"At the end of the day, Bollywood actresses continue to sign Telugu films mainly because of the lucrative paychecks, which are often higher than what they receive in Hindi cinema. But after every film, the same complaints resurface," commented a Hyderabad-based producer.
It remains to be seen whether Bollywood actresses, including Janhvi Kapoor, continue accepting Telugu projects while insisting on stronger roles and clearer creative assurances.
