Asian Group chief Suniel Narang’s resignation from the post of Telangana Film Chamber president has triggered fresh discussion within industry circles.
Many believe his decision could be linked to the latest arrangement proposed between producers and exhibitors over the ongoing percentage system issue.
The dispute had become a major talking point ahead of Ram Charan’s upcoming film Peddi.
Exhibitors recently demanded either an interim percentage system or an increase in rental value until the Telugu Film Chamber committee submits its final report. The Chamber eventually agreed to the proposal.
Under the new arrangement, exhibitors will now receive an additional share from the increased ticket prices in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, apart from the fixed rental amount they already get.
Until now, the extra revenue from ticket price hikes mainly benefited producers and distributors.
Industry insiders say this decision may not have gone well with certain sections, especially those who were uncomfortable with altering the existing revenue structure.
Many are now speculating that Narang’s resignation may have come against this backdrop, though no direct confirmation is available yet.
However, Suniel Narang later shared a note on social media explaining the reasons behind his decision. In his statement, he wrote:
“I Suniel Narang President TFCC writing to formally notify the chamber dignitaries regarding my resignation.
The reason is that we are pressured to take decisions to please few office bearers which I can't do anymore and moreover my health is not supporting further.
The chamber should run on anonymous decisions which are not happening therefore please relieve me with immediate effect.
I am suggesting Sekar or Vijender to take charge immediately”.
Amid this backdrop, if not this particular deal, internal ego clashes linked to the latest producers-exhibitors issue could also have contributed to Suniel Narang’s decision to step down.
Suniel Narang remains one of the very few powerful figures in Tollywood with a strong presence across multiple sectors including production, distribution, multiplex chains and single-screen theatres.
