August 2026 will be remembered as a special month in Tollywood history.
Usually, the Telugu film industry struggles to deliver even 10 solid hits in a year. Getting one proper hit in a month itself is difficult. But this August, Tollywood delivered not one or two, but three successful films.
The month started on a positive note with Korean Kanakaraju. The film finally brought Varun Tej back on the success track. Made with a modest target of around Rs 13 crore, the film reportedly collected nearly Rs 50 crore gross worldwide within 10 days.
Interestingly, the dubbed film DC, which released alongside Korean Kanakaraju, also performed well. The film, featuring director Lokesh Kanagaraj as the hero, reportedly recorded houseful shows in some centres in Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad and Vijayawada.
The second week brought another solid success in the form of Viswanadh & Sons.
Starring Suriya and Mamitha Baiju, the film performed strongly in the Telugu States. Released for Independence Day, it has reportedly collected around Rs 126 crore gross so far.
It also became one of Suriya’s recent films to cross the Rs 50 crore mark in the Telugu States.
However, not every film succeeded.
Vishal’s Makutam, which released alongside Viswanadh & Sons, failed at the box office. Annapurna Studios’ Palla Burusu and Panchali Pancha Bharthruka also failed to make an impact.
Then came Irumudi in the third week.
The Ravi Teja-starrer turned into a super hit. In fact, it is not only one of the biggest hits of August but is also emerging as one of the biggest Telugu hits of the year.
Directed by Shiva Nirvana, Irumudi has already crossed Rs 170 crore gross worldwide and is expected to continue strongly in theatres for another couple of weeks.
Around four small films, including Ameer Log, which released along with Irumudi, failed at the box office.
Finally came Toxic, which was promoted as one of the biggest films of the year.
Trade circles expected the film to continue Tollywood’s winning streak, but the result turned out to be the opposite. Despite a huge opening, Toxic failed to sustain because of weak audience response to the content and emerged as a major disappointment.
Overall, nearly 20 films hit theatres in August.
Among them, Irumudi, Viswanadh & Sons and Korean Kanakaraju emerged as the clear winners. DC registered good openings, while Toxic turned into a major disappointment.
A few re-releases also came and went without creating much impact.
Despite the failures, three notable hits in a single month made August 2026 a rare and memorable month for Tollywood.
