Suriya has been constantly experimenting with different genres, directors and storytelling styles over the last decade. But while his efforts as an actor have been widely appreciated, his theatrical box office track record has not matched that ambition.
This is not about his performances, as Suriya has delivered strong work in several films. The issue is strictly about theatrical results.
His last major commercial success was arguably Si3 in 2017, the third film in the popular Singam franchise. Though the film did well commercially, it also faced criticism for being repetitive.
After that came Thaanaa Serndha Koottam with director Vignesh Shivan. The film created good buzz before release but ended up with mixed reviews and an average box office result.
Films like NGK with Selvaraghavan and Kaappaan with K V Anand also failed to live up to expectations.
During the pandemic, Suriya took the OTT route with Soorarai Pottru and Jai Bhim. Both films received huge critical acclaim and became landmark digital releases. Many still believe they could have been big theatrical successes under normal conditions.
In 2022, Suriya returned to theatres with Etharkkum Thunindhavan, directed by Pandiraj. Though the film had a strong social message, it did not create the expected impact at the box office.
Interestingly, one of the biggest talking points of Suriya’s recent career came not from a full-length film, but from his five-minute cameo as Rolex in Vikram. His appearance in the Lokesh Kanagaraj film became an instant sensation, and fans continue to demand a separate Rolex film.
The situation worsened with Kanguva in 2024. Directed by Siva and made on a massive scale, the film arrived with huge expectations. However, it ended up as a major box office failure and faced heavy criticism for its execution and content.
Even Retro, Suriya’s film with Karthik Subbaraj, could not turn its pre-release buzz into sustained theatrical success. Despite its stylish presentation, fresh concept and the viral popularity of the song Kanimaa, the film failed to deliver the expected result.
For nearly ten years, Suriya’s theatrical graph has mostly moved between average performers, underperformers and outright setbacks. Kanguva became the biggest blow in that phase.
That is why Karuppu has become very important for Suriya. Directed by RJ Balaji and starring Trisha Krishnan as the female lead, the film is expected to bring him back into the commercial success zone.
However, the film is now facing last-minute release tension. Online bookings were reportedly paused in some centres, while a few theatres cancelled reservations, creating confusion among fans just before release.
Reports suggest that financial and distribution-related issues are behind the sudden disruption. Though the film had good buzz and strong advance bookings, the uncertainty has increased pressure on the team.
For Suriya, Karuppu is not just another release. It is a crucial box office test after a long dry spell in theatres. If the release issues are resolved and the film gets positive talk, it could become the clean commercial hit he badly needs.
Suriya once ruled the mass zone with films like Ghajini, Ayan, Vel and the Singam series. Now, Karuppu has the responsibility of bringing back that old crowd-pulling power.
