Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has repeatedly spoken about his ambitious vision for Hyderabad.
He has said that the city should stop comparing itself with Bollywood or neighbouring film industries and instead compete directly with Hollywood.
According to him, Hyderabad has the infrastructure, safety, technological ecosystem, and film industry needed to emerge as a global cinema capital.
He has also recently expressed his dream of bringing the Olympics to Hyderabad, reinforcing his larger vision of transforming the city into a world-class destination.
If that is the goal, a simple question arises. Christopher Nolan, one of the world’s most celebrated filmmakers, is currently in Mumbai along with producer Emma Thomas and stars Matt Damon and Tom Holland. Their visit has created significant buzz and once again placed Mumbai in the global spotlight.
Why could Hyderabad not have been included in such a visit?
With world-class studios, a thriving VFX industry, and some of India’s biggest production houses, Hyderabad has every reason to pitch itself as a preferred destination for international filmmakers.
Of course, the itinerary of a Hollywood team is influenced by several commercial and logistical factors. However, if Hyderabad truly wants to compete with Hollywood instead of merely talking about it, the government must actively build relationships with global studios, filmmakers, and production companies.
Hosting such delegations is not just about publicity. It could lead to future film shoots, investments, tourism, technological partnerships, and greater global recognition.
Christopher Nolan and his team are in Mumbai to promote The Odyssey ahead of its India release on July 17. Their visit has generated considerable excitement and once again highlighted Mumbai as the preferred destination for major Hollywood promotional events.
If Hyderabad truly aspires to establish itself on the global stage, attracting such high-profile film teams should become a priority.
After all, building a global cinema hub requires more than ambitious statements. It requires creating opportunities that bring the world’s biggest filmmakers to the city.
