Thalapathy Vijay’s much-awaited film Jana Nayagan finally arrived in theatres on Thursday after facing delays over its censor certificate.
Despite massive fan celebrations and strong pre-release hype, the film delivered a lower-than-expected opening at the box office.
According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Jana Nayagan collected Rs 41 crore net in India on its opening day from 13,067 shows.
The film’s India gross stood at approximately Rs 48.27 crore, while its overseas gross was reported to be around Rs 30 crore. This took the worldwide opening-day collection to nearly Rs 78.27 crore.
The Tamil version contributed the biggest share, earning around Rs 36.50 crore net. The Telugu version collected Rs 2.75 crore, while the Hindi version brought in Rs 1.75 crore.
Although the numbers are impressive, Jana Nayagan failed to match the opening-day collections of some of Vijay’s previous major releases.
Beast had collected around Rs 49.30 crore net in India on its first day, while The Greatest of All Time opened with approximately Rs 44 crore.
The film also failed to enter the list of Tamil releases that crossed the Rs 50 crore net mark in India on opening day.
Vijay’s Leo, Rajinikanth’s Coolie and 2.0 remain among the biggest Tamil opening-day performers.
Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is being promoted as Vijay’s final film as an actor. It was originally planned as a grand farewell to his fans before his full-time entry into politics.
Produced by KVN Productions on a reported budget of Rs 500 crore, the film stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol and Mamitha Baiju in important roles. Anirudh Ravichander has composed the music.
Despite the huge expectations surrounding Vijay’s farewell film, its opening-day performance has fallen short of the blockbuster-level numbers anticipated by the trade.
