The makers of DC are facing criticism on social media after actress Wamiqa Gabbi was left out of a special celebration marking the film’s success.
The modern adaptation of Devdas, starring Lokesh Kanagaraj and Wamiqa Gabbi, reportedly emerged as a blockbuster.
Following the film’s success, Sun Pictures released a video showing its chairman Kalanithi Maran presenting brand-new BMW cars to director Arun Matheswaran, Lokesh Kanagaraj and music composer Anirudh Ravichander.
However, the gesture quickly sparked a backlash, with many social media users questioning why Wamiqa Gabbi was not included.
One user sarcastically wrote, “Private jet for Wamiqa.”
Another commented that the trailer suggested the female lead had an important role and questioned why only the men were being rewarded.
Several others echoed the same sentiment, saying Wamiqa deserved a car as well.
One user wrote, “It’s Wamiqa’s movie, she deserves it before the male lead.”
Another urged Kalanithi Maran to “be the change” and reward Wamiqa too, arguing that her performance and popularity as Chandra contributed significantly to the film’s success.
Some users also pointed out that Wamiqa received strong cheers in theatres and argued that the film’s success was a collective effort rather than the achievement of only the three men who received the cars.
In DC, Lokesh Kanagaraj plays Devadas, a man caught in a difficult situation where survival comes at a heavy cost. Wamiqa Gabbi plays Chandra, a character who shares a close connection with him.
Directed by Arun Matheswaran, DC was released in theatres on August 7, with Dharma Productions handling distribution in Hindi-speaking markets.
Apart from DC, Lokesh Kanagaraj has a busy slate ahead. After directing Rajinikanth in Coolie in 2025, he is also working on his first Telugu film with Allu Arjun, currently referred to as AA23.
