Interview With Actor Draws Flak; Journalist Apologises

An interview with actor Sampoornesh Babu during the promotional campaign for Nani and Srikanth Odela’s The Paradise has triggered criticism on social media over the manner in which senior film journalist Nagendra Kumar questioned the actor.

Sampoornesh Babu, known largely for his comic and spoof-oriented performances, plays a serious character named Biryani, a close friend of Nani’s character in the film. He has described the role as very different from the characters he has played earlier in his career.

A clip from the interview went viral after viewers objected to some of the questions posed by Nagendra Kumar.

In the viral clip, the journalist is seen questioning how Sampoornesh thought of becoming a hero despite having no film-industry background and making remarks about his appearance and chances of succeeding as an actor. The tone of the questioning was widely perceived online as disrespectful and humiliating.

Several social media users criticised the journalist, saying the questions crossed the line between humour and personal insult.

Sampoornesh, however, remained calm throughout the interaction and responded without confrontation. His restraint itself became a talking point, with many users praising the way he handled the situation.

The controversy comes at a time when the actor is attempting a major departure from his earlier screen image. In interviews promoting The Paradise, Sampoornesh said director Srikanth Odela offered him the role of Biryani, which gave him an opportunity to explore a more serious side as an actor.

Following the backlash, Nagendra Kumar released a clarification and apologised to Sampoornesh Babu and his fans. He said his remarks were made in a light-hearted manner because of his long association with the actor and that he had no intention of insulting him.

He also said he respected Sampoornesh’s struggles and personal qualities and apologised to anyone who felt hurt by the interview.

The clarification, however, did not completely end the criticism online. Some users argued that personal familiarity should not be used to justify remarks that may appear insulting when made in a public interview.
