Suriya is enjoying the success of his latest Tamil blockbuster Karuppu, but the actor has revealed that the film’s journey to theatres was not smooth.
At a success meet held in Chennai, Suriya opened up about the financial problems the team faced even after the shoot was completed. He also hinted at the possibility of a sequel.
Directed by RJ Balaji, Karuppu stars Suriya and Trisha Krishnan in the lead roles. The fantasy-action entertainer has emerged as one of the biggest Tamil hits of 2026.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, the film crossed the Rs 200 crore mark worldwide within days of release and became Suriya’s highest-grossing film so far.
Speaking at the event, Suriya admitted that the team went through serious financial stress during production.
He revealed that a special climax song dedicated to Karuppasamy was shot nearly five months after the edit had already been locked.
According to Suriya, the team decided to shoot the song even though the production house was already under financial pressure at that time.
The film also faced release hurdles. Karuppu was originally scheduled to release on May 14, but its release was reportedly delayed due to last-minute issues related to pending dues to distributors.
The movie finally released a day later, on May 15, and quickly turned the situation in its favour with strong word of mouth and huge audience turnout.
At the success meet, Suriya said he was extremely happy with the overwhelming response from audiences.
He revealed that he had never signed a film as quickly as Karuppu, saying the project was finalised within less than an hour of narration.
The actor also said that seeing photographs of housefull boards outside theatres gave him immense happiness, especially because audiences across age groups connected with the film.
Fans are now eagerly discussing the possibility of a sequel. The ending of Karuppu hints at a bigger political battle ahead, with a possible face-off titled Karuppu vs Vellai.
When asked about a sequel, Suriya responded in a cryptic manner, saying, “Belief is life.”
RJ Balaji later confirmed that plans for a sequel are being considered.
Online discussions around the film also reflect the excitement over Suriya’s comeback. Many fans have described Karuppu as the actor’s long-awaited commercial revival after a difficult box-office phase.
The film’s record-breaking collections and strong performance in Tamil Nadu and Kerala have added to the celebration.
