Actor Suriya has opened up about the intense financial pressure he faced ahead of the release of Karuppu, revealing that he had to take additional loans at the last minute to ensure the film reached theatres.
In a recent interview, Suriya recalled the difficult period and thanked his wife, actor Jyotika, for standing by him and trusting his decisions during the crisis.
“Thanks to her again. It was a huge financial burden on me. The problem came up at the last minute, and I had to take additional loans. She trusted me and allowed me to go ahead with them,” Suriya told The Hollywood Reporter India.
The actor admitted that the decision involved considerable risk, as any failure at the box office could have affected his entire family.
“If something had gone wrong and the film had not been received positively, we would have had to face the consequences together as a family,” he said.
Suriya added that even experienced actors sometimes find themselves caught in situations beyond their control.
“No matter how long you have been in the industry, certain situations can be bigger than you. At such moments, you need to take a leap of faith and believe that you can overcome the problem and repay the loans. It was a major step for me, but because of that trust and intuition, we managed to put everything together,” he said.
Jyotika, however, refused to take credit for the decision and insisted that the effort belonged entirely to Suriya.
“This was completely his work,” she said.
Suriya disagreed, pointing out that every major financial decision made by him would ultimately affect the family.
“Directly or indirectly, the family will suffer because of any decision I make. So, facing that situation was a collective effort,” he said.
Jyotika added that the couple approached every major decision together.
“We are in everything together. Even when it comes to parenting, we remain on the same page. We discuss things first and then communicate the decision to the children,” she said.
Speaking about the Karuppu crisis, Jyotika praised Suriya’s generosity and determination to ensure that the film was released.
“I think it was entirely his generosity and his desire to make the film work. It was a very big step, and he went all out,” she said.
Suriya, however, played down the praise and said several others had also played an important role in resolving the crisis.
“It was a collective effort. Even the financiers were supportive. They patiently agreed to take back only 25 to 30 per cent initially and allowed us to release the film. The theatre owners, financiers and everyone involved came together to make it possible,” he said.
Directed by RJ Balaji, Karuppu also stars Trisha Krishnan, Indrans, Natty, Swasika and Sshivada in important roles.
The film has cinematography by G K Vishnu, music by Sai Abhyankkar, production design by Arun Venjaramoodu and editing by R Kalaivanan.
