After his last two releases, Kanguva and Retro, failed to make a strong impact at the box office, all eyes were on Tamil star Suriya’s latest release, Karuppu.
Directed by RJ Balaji, the film features Trisha Krishnan opposite Suriya. Despite releasing a day later than its planned theatrical debut, Karuppu is doing strong business in India and overseas. It has also emerged as the biggest Tamil grosser of 2026 worldwide in its opening weekend.
Karuppu opened with Rs 15.50 crore on Friday, May 15. Thanks to good reviews and positive word of mouth, the film’s business jumped to Rs 24.1 crore on day two.
On Sunday, as the first weekend came to an end, the film witnessed another jump in collections, with its business climbing to nearly Rs 28.50 crore.
In three days, Karuppu has collected Rs 68 crore in India. Of this, the Tamil version contributed Rs 57.70 crore, while the Telugu version added Rs 10.30 crore.
Overseas, Karuppu collected Rs 42 crore in three days, taking its worldwide opening weekend gross past the Rs 120 crore mark.
The film is now eyeing the tag of Suriya’s biggest commercial hit and is also among the highest-grossing Tamil films of the year.
In Karuppu, Suriya and Trisha reunite for the fourth time after Mounam Pesiyadhe (2002), Aayutha Ezhuthu (2004) and Aaru (2005).
Interestingly, Karuppu’s day-one gross collections in India surpassed the lifetime business of these earlier films. It has now become the highest-grossing film in the Suriya-Trisha combination.
