Teja Sajja has created a different space for himself in Telugu cinema. Among the younger actors, he has maintained a decent success rate, though he is yet to achieve conventional star status.
His successful films, including Zombie Reddy, HanuMan and Mirai, have largely worked because of their content and his association with superhero, fantasy and larger-than-life characters.
However, his current lineup raises an interesting question. Instead of moving towards completely fresh genres and stories, Teja Sajja appears to be leaning heavily towards sequels.
He is already working on Mirai 2, the sequel to his recent fantasy adventure. Another major project is Jai Hanuman, the sequel to HanuMan. While Rishab Shetty is expected to play the central role, Teja Sajja is also part of the film.
Now, on the occasion of his birthday, another sequel has been announced. Zombie Reddy 2 brings him back to the franchise that gave him one of his early successes.
This means Teja currently has three sequels in his lineup.
The strategy is understandable. HanuMan became a major success, while Mirai also gave him a strong theatrical outing. Returning to established franchises gives the actor and filmmakers the advantage of an already familiar audience.
But it also raises the question of whether Teja is playing it safe at an important stage of his career.
He is yet to prove himself consistently outside superhero, fantasy and franchise-based films. A fresh story with a completely different character could help show whether his appeal extends beyond these established worlds.
For now, Teja Sajja appears to be betting on franchises that have already created recognition for him.
Whether this turns out to be a smart career strategy or eventually limits his growth as an actor will become clearer once these sequels hit the screens.
