Nani-starrer "The Paradise" has crashed at the North American box office despite crossing the $2 million mark in its first weekend.
The film received strong negative word of mouth and largely negative reviews after its release, resulting in a sharp drop following its impressive opening.
The film benefited from huge advance sales and a strong opening day. As a result, it managed to gross $2 million in its first weekend despite the poor trend thereafter.
The overall overseas performance was also strong, with "The Paradise" grossing approximately $2.9 million in its first weekend.
"The Paradise" was released on an advance basis in North America, and a $2 million gross is generally considered a strong result for a Nani film. However, this film came with much higher costs and expectations.
With collections dropping sharply after the opening day and limited scope for significant additions from Monday onwards, the $2 million haul is unlikely to be enough for the film to be considered a hit in the North American market.
The North American weekend breakdown is:
Day 1 (including premieres): $1.63M
Day 2: $155K
Day 3: $145K
Day 4: $80K (approx.)
Total weekend: $2M
The trend clearly shows that the film earned the bulk of its North American gross on the opening day itself. Collections dropped sharply from the second day and continued to fall through Sunday, indicating a significant crash after the initial rush.
