'The Paradise' Sparks Andhra-Telangana Debate

The portrayal of KCR in The Paradise has become a major point of discussion around the film. The movie features a character resembling KCR as part of its Telangana-rooted narrative, which has added a political angle to the already divided public response.

Some strongly pro-Telangana viewers argue that the film deserves support because of its Telangana identity and representation.

A section of them also claims that director Srikanth Odela is being unfairly targeted by critics and audiences from Andhra, while Nani is being spared because he himself comes from Andhra. These remain opinions being expressed on social media rather than established facts.

Another section of pro-Telangana viewers believes that the heroic portrayal of a KCR-like character may not have gone down well with sections of Andhra-centric, pro-TDP media, and they see this as one of the reasons behind the criticism surrounding the film.

At the same time, some YSRCP supporters are also perceived to be less enthusiastic about the film because of Nani’s earlier criticism of the Andhra Pradesh government over low cinema ticket prices.

In December 2021, Nani publicly called the ticket-pricing policy “illogical” and said it amounted to insulting audiences.

This has led to claims among some film followers that a section of YSRCP supporters has remained hostile towards Nani since then, though there is no clear evidence that any organised campaign against The Paradise exists.

The KCR factor has also created another layer of debate in Telangana itself. Some observers believe that presenting a KCR-like figure as a saviour may not appeal to sections of Congress supporters, adding yet another political dimension to the reactions around the film.

Thus, The Paradise is surrounded not only by discussions about its content and box-office performance, but also by regional and political interpretations.

With Telangana sentiment, Andhra-Telangana debates and party loyalties entering the conversation, the film is facing several external factors beyond ordinary movie criticism.

It remains to be seen whether these debates will fade away or continue to influence the public conversation around The Paradise in the coming days.
