The YRF Spy Universe appears to be losing its magic.
Alpha, starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, is struggling to deliver strong numbers at the Indian box office. After getting a boost on Blockbuster Tuesday, the film dropped again on Wednesday.
The spy thriller reportedly collected around Rs 3 crore on day six, taking its India net total to approximately Rs 45.8 crore.
For a women-led action film, the numbers may look decent. But with a reported budget of around Rs 100 crore and the massive backing of the YRF Spy Universe, the performance is clearly below expectations.
The bigger concern is the franchise’s recent track record.
Tiger 3, made on an estimated Rs 300 crore budget, collected around Rs 286 crore net in India and failed to emerge as a profitable venture.
Then came War 2, which reportedly cost around Rs 350 crore but finished with about Rs 244.29 crore net in India.
Now, Alpha also appears headed for a disappointing verdict, with its lifetime collection expected to remain below Rs 70 crore net against a reported Rs 100 crore cost.
That means the YRF Spy Universe has now suffered three straight setbacks after Pathaan.
Tiger 3 disappointed. War 2 failed to justify its huge budget. Alpha is now struggling to recover.
The latest losing streak raises serious questions over the future of a franchise that was once seen as Bollywood’s biggest cinematic universe.
Directed by Shiv Rawail and produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films, Alpha also stars Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor, with Hrithik Roshan appearing in a cameo.
The film is the seventh entry in the YRF Spy Universe.
For now, one thing is clear — after three consecutive disappointments, the spy universe badly needs a blockbuster rescue mission.
