The divorce case involving Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C. Joseph Vijay and his wife Sangeetha Sornalingam has been closed after she withdrew her petition.
Sangeetha appeared before the court through video conferencing on Friday and informed the judge of her decision to withdraw the divorce plea. She also submitted her reasons for doing so.
Sangeetha had filed for divorce in February this year before a family court in Chengalpattu, seeking dissolution of her marriage with Vijay.
The case had witnessed several adjournments in recent months. On June 15, Sangeetha had indicated that she intended to withdraw the petition and appeared through video conferencing to communicate her decision. The matter was then posted for further hearing on August 7.
Last month, the proceedings were again deferred after neither Vijay nor Sangeetha appeared before the court. On earlier occasions too, their lawyers had represented them and cited difficulties in attending the hearings personally.
Friday’s order formally brought the proceedings to an end following Sangeetha’s withdrawal of the petition.
In her original plea, Sangeetha had reportedly cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for seeking divorce. She had also sought permanent alimony and permission to continue residing in the couple’s matrimonial home in Neelankarai, Chennai.
Vijay and Sangeetha have been married for nearly three decades. They tied the knot on August 25, 1999, in a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony in Chennai.
The couple has two children — a son born in 2000 and a daughter born in 2005.
Speculation about problems in their marriage intensified in 2023 after Sangeetha was absent from several important public events attended by Vijay. Although those reports were denied at the time, questions resurfaced later when she was not seen at some major TVK political events.
The withdrawal of the divorce petition has now brought an end to the legal proceedings between the couple.
