Amaravati, the upcoming capital city of Andhra Pradesh, is facing a significant labour shortage, raising concerns over the pace of ongoing construction works.
According to official figures, a total of 89 projects are currently under execution in Amaravati. The value of the works already awarded stands at Rs 42,196 crore.
For these projects, around 36,010 workers are required. However, only 21,897 workers had been deployed till February. The current workforce has now dropped further to around 17,000, creating a serious gap between requirement and availability.
Officials have attributed the worker exodus to multiple reasons, including delayed wage payments, harsh summer conditions, lack of drinking water facilities and absence of shaded rest areas at work sites.
With temperatures rising sharply, many workers are reportedly unwilling to continue under difficult conditions without proper basic facilities.
The delay in wage payments has further added to their frustration, forcing several labourers to leave the project sites.
The shortage is likely to affect the speed of key infrastructure works in Amaravati unless immediate corrective steps are taken.
Officials are now expected to focus on improving worker facilities, ensuring timely payments and arranging basic amenities such as drinking water and shaded shelters.
The situation has once again highlighted the importance of labour welfare in large-scale infrastructure projects.
While thousands of crores worth of works are under execution, the availability and retention of workers will play a crucial role in keeping Amaravati’s development on track.
