YSR Congress party president and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Wednesday set his party’s agenda for the next assembly elections in the state in 2029, stating that his party would seek people’s mandate for his proposal of developing Mavigun (Machilipatnam-Vijayawada-Guntur corridor) as the new state capital.
He made this announcement at a press conference at his residence, thereby virtually indicating that he would once again dump Amaravati as the capital city of Andhra Pradesh.
“Our party will go the next assembly elections with the slogan of developing “Machilipatnam-Vijayawada-Guntur” (Mavigun) corridor as the new state capital, in place of Amaravati,” Jagan declared.
He said the next elections will be fought on the issue of Mavigun versus Amaravati.
“Those who accept Mavigun as the capital region will vote for the YSRCP and those who accept Amaravati as the capital may vote for the TDP. Let us see what will happen,” Jagan said.
Jagan reiterated that the YSRCP was committed to the 'Mavigun' concept and it would be incorporated into the party's election manifesto.
“The people of Andhra Pradesh would ultimately decide which vision they support,” he said.
The former chief minister alleged that the recent attempt by the YSRCP leaders to Amaravati were deliberately portrayed as an opposition to the state capital.
He said his party was trying to expose massive corruption and irregularities being carried out in the name of the capital city.
Jagan claimed that party representatives who visited the capital region after farmers requested them to do so were attacked, and that criminal cases were subsequently filed against the victims instead of the attackers.
He alleged that those questioning developments in Amaravati were being branded as troublemakers and subjected to police action.
He described the situation as a serious misuse of law and order and alleged that similar incidents had occurred repeatedly over the past two years, raising concerns about the state's justice system and public security.
“Our criticism was directed at alleged scams and the hardships faced by farmers in the Amaravati capital region. Farmers whose lands were acquired for the capital project continue to raise concerns and question why they are still facing unresolved issues,” he said.
