Former chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has demanded that the families of those who died in the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant accident be given Rs 1 crore compensation each.
Jagan visited Seven Hills Hospital today and met the workers who were injured in the accident. He also met the family members of those who lost their lives and consoled them.
Speaking to the media outside the hospital, Jagan said nine people had died in the accident. He said five people were injured and the condition of one of them was very serious.
According to him, one worker is undergoing treatment with 95 percent burn injuries.
Jagan said a similar accident had taken place 14 months ago, in which a worker named Pentaiah had died. At that time, the authorities had promised to give a job to one of his family members within a month, he said.
However, Jagan alleged that the promise was not fulfilled even now. He pointed to Pentaiah’s wife and daughter, who were present there, and said they had still not been given a job. He said when the officials were asked about it, they were saying that the file was missing.
Jagan criticised the state government, saying it had not given even one rupee from its side to the families of those who died in the Vizag Steel Plant accident.
He said the victims’ families were getting around Rs 1.72 crore through different sources, but questioned what additional help the state government was giving.
He said the government had not made any clear announcement on this issue.
Jagan claimed that during his government, Rs 1 crore compensation was given in such cases. Referring to the comments made by Nara Lokesh on Tuesday, Jagan said he was shocked to hear such statements.
He demanded that jobs be given to the families of the victims. He also told the affected families not to lose hope if the Chandrababu Naidu government failed to give Rs 1 crore compensation and jobs.
Jagan said that if people waited with patience and his government returned to power, he would provide Rs 1 crore compensation and jobs to the victims’ families.
