TMC MP Questions Jagan's Double Standards

YSR Congress Party president Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy’s latest post on the controversy surrounding the appointment of Election Commissioners has drawn a sharp response from Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, who questioned his stance towards the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre.

Jagan had posted a detailed statement on the appointment of Election Commissioners and the controversies surrounding the poll panel.

He called for greater impartiality and transparency in the functioning of the Election Commission and suggested that the law governing the appointment of Election Commissioners should be reconsidered in light of the changed circumstances.

Jagan’s post on X has attracted attention because of his political approach towards the BJP-led Union government during his tenure as Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister.

His party supported several key pieces of legislation introduced by the Centre on various occasions, despite not being formally part of the NDA.

Even after losing power in Andhra Pradesh, the YSRCP continued to extend support to the NDA government on several policy decisions and bills in Parliament.

Against this backdrop, Jagan’s latest criticism of the Election Commission and his call for a review of the appointment mechanism have triggered a debate over whether the YSRCP is changing its approach towards the Centre.

Mahua Moitra, a prominent member of the INDIA bloc, responded to Jagan’s post on social media.

While reposting his statement, she questioned what she described as his continued support for the Union government on important issues while simultaneously raising concerns over the functioning of constitutional institutions.

Moitra urged Jagan to stop supporting the government on all issues and specifically asked him to restrain his party MPs from backing the proposed delimitation exercise.

She also appealed to the YSRCP chief not to support those who, in her words, undermine institutions and later seek public approval.

Her remarks amounted to a broader political challenge to the YSRCP over its approach towards the NDA government.

The episode has also brought the YSRCP into a fresh political exchange with parties in the INDIA bloc, particularly over the delimitation exercise and the role of the Election Commission.
