It appears the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has decided to keep the pot boiling continuously with regard to the alleged custodial death of 25-year-old Gade Sai Krishna at Krishna Lanka police station in Vijayawada in May.
On Monday, the party extended financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh to the family of Saikrishna.
A delegation of senior YSRCP leaders visited Saikrishna's mother, Vijayalakshmi, at her brother's residence in Vaddeswaram and handed over a demand draft worth Rs 20 lakh.
The delegation included senior leaders from the Kapu community led by former minister Ambati Rambabu, Thota Trimurthulu, Simhadri Ramesh, and several other party functionaries.
The leaders assured Vijayalakshmi that the YSRCP would continue to stand by the family until justice is delivered.
They urged her not to lose hope and reiterated the party's commitment to supporting the family throughout the legal process.
Former minister Ambati Rambabu said the financial assistance was contributed collectively by 40 Kapu leaders of the YSRCP, with each leader contributing Rs 50,000 to raise the total amount of Rs 20 lakh.
It may be recalled that the Gade Saikrishna case has become one of the most controversial custodial death cases in Andhra Pradesh in recent months.
Saikrishna, against whom a rowdy sheet had reportedly been opened, was allegedly taken from Markapur to the Krishnalanka Police Station.
His mother, Vijayalakshmi, later alleged that her son went missing after being taken into police custody, an allegation that created a political and public storm across the state.
She subsequently approached the courts seeking justice. Considering the seriousness of the allegations, the Andhra Pradesh government constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case.
Following its investigation, the SIT concluded that Saikrishna had died in police custody.
Based on its findings, the investigating agency arrested Nagaraju, the then Circle Inspector of Krishna Lanka Police Station, holding him responsible for the alleged custodial death.
