Senior YSR Congress Party leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council Botsa Satyanarayana appears to be preparing his daughter, Botsa Anusha, for an active role in politics.
Botsa, one of the most experienced politicians in the state, has remained a dominant force in north Andhra Pradesh politics for decades.
He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1999 and later served as a minister in the undivided Andhra Pradesh government for nearly a decade between 2004 and 2014.
During his political career, he held ministerial portfolios in the cabinets of former chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy as well as his son, former chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.
He also served as president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) from 2011 to 2014 before joining the YSRCP in 2015, where he emerged as one of the party’s senior leaders.
According to sources, unlike many political leaders who groom their sons as successors, Botsa appears to be promoting his daughter Anusha as his political heir, despite also having a son, Sandeep.
With Botsa currently focusing on state-level politics in his role as Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, Anusha has reportedly been handling party affairs in the Cheepurupalli Assembly constituency on her father’s behalf for the past eight months.
She has been actively participating in public events, attending social functions across the constituency and Vizianagaram district alongside her father, and taking part in social service activities to strengthen her public outreach.
Anusha has also been leading the YSRCP’s “Mana Kutumbam – Mana Karyakarta” initiative, aimed at reconnecting with party workers who had distanced themselves from the organisation and encouraging them to become active again.
She has toured villages to create awareness about the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) programme and has also led protests in Cheepurupalli over the YSRCP’s allegations of irregularities in the Mega DSC teacher recruitment process.
Her growing public profile has fuelled speculation that Botsa Satyanarayana may field her as a candidate in the next Assembly elections.
Political observers note that factors such as a possible delimitation of Assembly constituencies and the implementation of women’s reservation could create more opportunities for female candidates.
Botsa’s health is also believed to be a factor behind the apparent transition. He underwent open-heart surgery in late 2023 and has since reduced his field-level political engagements.
Against this backdrop, party circles believe he is gradually positioning his daughter to take on a larger political role in the years ahead.
