Even as the YSR Congress Party, led by former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, is trying to regain the support of the Kapu community by taking advantage of growing dissatisfaction within it, Kapu leaders in the party appear to be following different political paths, fuelling speculation about internal divisions.
Recent developments suggest that some senior Kapu leaders in the YSRCP are openly advocating community unity beyond party lines, rather than strictly following the party’s strategy to win back Kapu voters.
For instance, while senior YSRCP leader Ambati Rambabu has largely followed the party line on Kapu politics, senior MLC Thota Trimurthulu, a veteran leader from the erstwhile East Godavari district, has taken a different stand.
He has openly appealed to Kapu leaders across political parties to come together on a common platform. His remarks are reportedly causing discomfort within the YSRCP leadership, as they differ significantly from the party’s official position.
Using memorial meetings organised in honour of veteran Kapu leader Mudragada Padmanabham as a platform, Thota called for greater community unity beyond political boundaries.
He also announced that he would attend a Kapu unity meeting in Vijayawada being organised by TDP MLA Bonda Umamaheswara Rao. The move is being seen as an attempt to cross established party lines.
Thota has also supported reservations for Kapus, though this is not part of the YSRCP’s official policy.
In the 2024 elections, the Kapu community overwhelmingly supported the TDP-Jana Sena-BJP alliance, particularly in the Godavari districts.
Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan’s influence significantly weakened the YSRCP’s electoral base in the region. In several constituencies, the party even struggled to retain its deposits.
Against this backdrop, some Kapu leaders in the YSRCP appear to believe that depending entirely on Jagan Mohan Reddy’s political strategy could damage their future prospects.
Instead, they seem interested in working with Kapu leaders in the ruling alliance under the banner of community interests, while exploring new avenues to remain politically relevant.
Similarly, senior YSRCP leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Botsa Satyanarayana recently said communities should not merely demand their rights but must also have the strength to fight for and secure them.
Political circles interpreted his remarks as an indirect message about the YSRCP’s present political approach and its future direction.
This has led to speculation that a broader Kapu political platform could emerge in the coming months.
Although several Kapu leaders enjoyed considerable prominence during the YSRCP’s tenure in power, they are believed to feel that certain party decisions adversely affected both their community’s interests and their own political survival in their constituencies.
As a result, there is growing speculation that some leaders could use a “Kapu agenda” as a platform to chart an independent political course or eventually move closer to the ruling alliance.
Whether these developments represent a genuine movement for Kapu self-respect or the beginning of a larger political regrouping remains to be seen.
With the YSRCP trying to rebuild itself as a strong opposition force, the independent positions taken by several influential Kapu leaders from the Godavari region could pose a serious challenge to Jagan Mohan Reddy’s efforts.
