Is Hyderabad's Spending Power Declining?

Is Hyderabad's Spending Power Declining?

Until recently, Hyderabad was a booming market for branded food outlets, international ice cream chains, premium pubs and other lifestyle businesses. The city’s youth were known for spending freely on food, entertainment and experiences.

But the picture now appears to be changing, with consumers becoming more cautious and price-conscious.

Pubs, restaurants and other food-and-beverage businesses in Hyderabad are reportedly facing losses, with several outlets shutting down. This has raised questions about changing consumer spending patterns in the city.

Over the past one or two years, discretionary spending among some Hyderabadis appears to have slowed. One possible reason is the weaker job market, with fewer quality jobs being created, concerns over layoffs and uncertainty about the impact of AI making consumers more careful with their money.

The change is also visible in some commercial office areas.

Branded coffee shops that once attracted regular crowds are reportedly closing, while smaller tea and coffee outlets selling beverages for around Rs 25 are opening in their place and drawing office employees.

This suggests that consumers are becoming more focused on value for money. A coffee costing Rs 90 or more at a branded outlet may no longer seem worthwhile when a similar drink is available for Rs 25 at a local shop.

Of course, this alone does not prove that Hyderabad’s overall spending power has declined.

But the shift from premium brands to cheaper alternatives is certainly worth watching. It suggests that affordability and value are becoming more important in everyday spending decisions.
