Political circles in Andhra Pradesh are abuzz with rumours about a possible reconciliation between YSR Congress Party president Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy and his sister, Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president Y S Sharmila.
According to reports, family elders and close well-wishers are trying to broker a settlement between the two. Sharmila is believed to have conveyed through intermediaries that she is willing to set aside past differences and work towards restoring unity within the YSR family.
There is also talk that Sharmila may personally visit Jagan and invite him to her daughter’s upcoming wedding. However, there is no confirmation yet on whether Jagan has agreed to any reconciliation proposal.
The reported efforts come after several years of strained relations between the siblings, involving political differences, property disputes and other family matters.
Their relationship deteriorated over the past four to five years as disagreements over political roles and the distribution of family assets became increasingly public.
The situation worsened after Sharmila entered Telangana politics and later joined the Congress, eventually becoming president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee.
During the 2024 Assembly elections, Sharmila campaigned strongly against her brother and repeatedly criticised Jagan and the YSRCP government. The public nature of their differences became a major talking point in Andhra Pradesh politics.
The family was also divided over the long-running controversy surrounding the murder of Jagan’s uncle and former minister Y S Vivekananda Reddy.
Sharmila supported Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Y S Sunitha in her legal fight connected with the case, in which Kadapa MP Y S Avinash Reddy has also figured prominently.
Latest reports suggest that senior members of the family and some close associates have advised Sharmila to consider ending the prolonged dispute with Jagan.
They are said to be taking the initiative to find an amicable settlement, particularly on property-related matters, while also attempting to send a message that the YSR family can remain united despite political differences.
Some Congress leaders and senior associates close to the YSR family are also reported to favour a reconciliation.
Within YSRCP circles, a possible patch-up between Jagan and Sharmila is being discussed in the context of the party’s longer-term political strategy ahead of the 2029 Assembly elections.
Jagan is reportedly considering another statewide padayatra beginning in the second half of 2027. Whether the family dispute will be resolved before then remains uncertain.
