YSR Congress Party president and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has reportedly decided to extend support to crucial bills to be introduced by the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre, despite his political rival, the Telugu Desam Party, being a key alliance partner.
Jagan has called a meeting of party MPs at Tadepalli on Thursday and is expected to issue fresh directions ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which begins on July 20.
The Centre is preparing to introduce several important pieces of legislation during the upcoming session and is reportedly seeking the support of NDA allies and friendly parties to ensure their smooth passage.
The YSRCP had earlier extended support to the Women’s Reservation Bill while seeking safeguards regarding the proposed delimitation exercise.
During an earlier parliamentary debate, Jagan questioned what opposition parties had achieved by opposing the Women’s Reservation Bill and the Delimitation Bill, arguing that such legislation should be viewed constructively.
At the same time, YSRCP Lok Sabha floor leader V. Mithun Reddy urged the Centre to include its assurances on delimitation in the legislation itself.
He sought written safeguards to ensure the balanced redistribution of constituencies without creating regional disparities and called for a process that guarantees fair political representation to all parties.
He also cautioned against any delimitation exercise that could weaken opposition parties. The YSRCP reiterated its unconditional support for the Women’s Reservation Bill while seeking greater clarity on delimitation.
With Parliament set to reconvene, Jagan is expected to direct his party MPs to support the Centre’s proposed legislation while also raising issues concerning Andhra Pradesh.
The YSRCP is likely to use the parliamentary session to highlight developments in the state and press the Centre on matters affecting Andhra Pradesh.
