When Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president Y S Sharmila announced on X that her daughter Anjali Reddy is getting married to Dr Somala Raghuram Reddy, a US-based doctor, the news generated considerable curiosity in media and political circles.
In her post, Sharmila briefly mentioned that Dr Raghuram Reddy is the son of Somala Subba Reddy and Padma, a couple originally from Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh.
The family is currently settled in the United States, where Raghuram Reddy has established himself as a medical professional.
When netizens searched online to learn more about the Somala family, very little information was available. The family apparently has no known political connections, and several members are said to be medical professionals.
However, inquiries suggest that the Somala family is extremely wealthy, with assets both in the US and in India.
According to sources, Subba Reddy reportedly made substantial money through real estate investments in and around Hyderabad during the late 2000s, when the property market witnessed a major boom during the first tenure of former Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy.
“He used to be referred to as ‘ORR Subba Reddy’ because he had reportedly purchased large tracts of land around Hyderabad’s Nehru Outer Ring Road. He had no major business ventures apart from valuable land holdings along the ORR, which are believed to have contributed significantly to his wealth,” a source said.
The Subba Reddy family moved to the US around 15 years ago and settled there. The family is also said to have prospered in the US and is regarded as a well-established NRI family.
It is not immediately known how Sharmila’s family came into contact with the Somala family, eventually leading to the marriage alliance between her daughter and Subba Reddy’s son.
