The Telugu Desam Party, led by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, is said to be eyeing the takeover of a popular Telugu television channel that has recently been in the limelight for its anti-government coverage.
According to sources, the channel management is allegedly being pressured to give up its stake to a pro-TDP industrial group, with the aim of ensuring that there is no adverse coverage of the Chandrababu Naidu government ahead of the next elections.
There have already been reports of large-scale employee retrenchments at the channel, along with changes in several key positions. New faces are reportedly being brought into important roles as part of what sources describe as a broader restructuring exercise.
Sources familiar with the developments claim that a prominent contracting and infrastructure company holding a stake in the channel is willing to transfer its interest to persons said to be backed by senior leaders of the ruling alliance.
According to these sources, the proposed transaction could allegedly be adjusted through the award of another project or through some other form of commercial arrangement.
The television channel in question has for some time been perceived as taking an anti-government editorial line. Against this backdrop, efforts are reportedly under way to bring the channel under a different ownership and management structure by acquiring the stake held by the construction company.
Sources further claim that while the government may not be directly involved in the proposed transaction, the TDP could be operating behind the scenes and facilitating the developments.
There is also speculation in media circles that another television channel could be open to reaching an understanding with the government if an opportunity arises.
Sources say some other political players in the state are also quietly exploring opportunities to gain influence over existing media organisations rather than setting up entirely new platforms.
For now, however, these claims remain unverified, and there has been no official confirmation from the channel management, the companies involved, or the TDP.
