Soon after reports emerged that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay had appointed astrologer Radhan Pandit Vetrivel as his Officer on Special Duty, Congress MP Karti P Chidambaram triggered political chatter with a cryptic two-word social media post: “Caligula – Incitatus.”
Political observers were quick to connect the classical reference to Vijay and Vetrivel.
In popular Roman history, Emperor Caligula is often remembered for allegedly planning to make his favourite horse, Incitatus, a consul.
Vetrivel had earlier predicted a “landslide victory” for Vijay in the Assembly elections. Against this backdrop, Karti’s post was widely seen as a possible sly dig at the new appointment.
The timing added more spice, as the Congress is an ally of Vijay’s TVK in Tamil Nadu.
This has led to speculation on whether the remark was just a historical reference or a subtle message from within the alliance itself.
