The Supreme Court may order a comprehensive investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the alleged custodial killing of 25-year-old Gade Sai Krishna, who was taken into custody by Krishnalanka police in Vijayawada in May this year.
The Supreme Court, while hearing the matter, indicated that it could intervene and pass appropriate orders if the Andhra Pradesh High Court does not direct a CBI investigation.
Senior counsel appearing for YSR Congress Party MP from Tirupati Maddila Gurumoorthy informed the court that the Andhra Pradesh High Court had reserved its judgment in the habeas corpus petition.
The counsel also told the apex court that a related petition seeking a CBI probe remained pending before the High Court.
After considering the submissions, the Supreme Court indicated that it would take into account the High Court’s decision on the demand for a CBI investigation before passing further orders.
The apex court has already expressed serious concern over several aspects of the case, including Sai Krishna’s non-production before a magistrate, the delay in registering an FIR, the disappearance of CCTV footage and allegations concerning the role of senior police officials.
The case relates to Sai Krishna, who was apprehended on May 6 and brought to Krishnalanka Police Station. According to the prosecution, he was never produced before a magistrate.
The matter is now under close judicial scrutiny, with the Supreme Court expected to examine the High Court’s decision before determining whether further intervention, including a possible CBI probe, is required.
