YSR Congress Party president and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy is reportedly strengthening his political strategy team by bringing in Kapil Sahu, a former member of Prashant Kishor’s I-PAC, as a key political strategist.
Political parties across the country are increasingly relying on professional strategists, election consultants and dedicated social media teams to shape campaigns, build political messaging and influence voter opinion.
The trend is no longer limited to major parties. Even local leaders and elected representatives are now maintaining specialised social media and political strategy teams.
Against this backdrop, the reported entry of Sahu into Jagan’s political team has attracted attention in Andhra Pradesh.
Sahu previously worked with Prashant Kishor’s Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) before leaving the organisation and setting up his own political consulting team. He later worked with several smaller political outfits.
However, his association with Tamil actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the party’s electoral performance reportedly brought him greater visibility in political strategy circles.
The big question now is whether Sahu can help turn around Jagan’s fortunes in the 2029 Assembly elections.
It is a fact that the success of any political party depends on several factors. However, professional political strategists often receive a significant share of the credit for designing campaign strategies, political messaging and organisational structures.
Jagan had earlier worked with Prashant Kishor and I-PAC during his political campaign.
After Kishor moved away from the YSRCP, Jagan’s team reportedly brought in other strategists, including Rishiraj Singh. Singh was also associated with I-PAC and is understood to have been part of its early team.
However, after the YSRCP’s disastrous performance in the 2024 Assembly elections, when the party was reduced to just 11 seats, changes were made in Jagan’s political strategy setup. Alla Mohan Sai Dutt was subsequently brought into the team.
The latest move to reportedly bring Kapil Sahu on board is being viewed as part of Jagan’s efforts to revive the YSRCP and rebuild the party ahead of the next Assembly elections.
Sources claim that Sahu’s team has already started working from Chennai and Bengaluru and is likely to establish an office in Vijayawada in the near future.
Jagan’s younger brother Y. S. Anil Kumar Reddy is also said to have played a role in facilitating the association, given his reported personal rapport with Vijay and links with Sahu’s team.
The development comes at a time when Jagan has gradually become more active in Andhra Pradesh politics after remaining relatively low-profile following the YSRCP’s poor performance in the 2024 elections.
His recent public meetings and programmes have attracted significant crowds, which has reportedly boosted the confidence of the former Chief Minister and his party.
However, renewed political activity and the reported appointment of another strategist also raise an important question: can professional election management alone bring the YSRCP back to power?
Political observers point out that Jagan may need to focus on several issues beyond campaign strategy.
These include systematic restructuring of the party, identifying and encouraging committed grassroots workers and conducting a comprehensive review of the shortcomings of the previous government.
The party may also need to reassess some of its policies and political approaches. It may also have to exercise greater caution while responding to cases involving people accused of criminal offences, as such interventions could create an adverse public perception.
Another key factor would be avoiding any underestimation of the ruling TDP-led alliance, which remains a significant political force in the state.
The crowds attending Jagan’s meetings and tours should also not automatically be seen as proof of an electoral comeback. Jagan has traditionally attracted large crowds whenever he enters the public domain.
The real challenge is converting that enthusiasm into votes at the polling booths.
In this context, political strategists can provide campaign planning, voter analytics, messaging and organisational inputs. But they cannot guarantee electoral victory on their own.
Sahu’s reported involvement could therefore become an important part of Jagan’s political revival strategy. But the success of the new team will ultimately depend on how effectively the YSRCP addresses its organisational weaknesses and reconnects with voters.
