It appears that the YSR Congress Party has decided to sustain its campaign for the Machilipatnam-Vijayawada-Guntur (MAVIGUN) capital concept, floated by party president and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, till the next Assembly elections in the state.
While the Chandrababu Naidu-led coalition government has speeded up development works in the Amaravati capital region, YSRCP leaders are continuing to push the Mavigun capital proposal. They are raising the issue at every meeting and press conference, while also alleging growing corruption in the Amaravati capital construction works.
According to senior YSRCP leader and former minister Perni Nani, the Amaravati capital project has become a symbol of “organized corruption and systematic discrimination.”
He said it would never be completed as long as TDP leaders continue to make money from it.
Perni Nani said the Mavigun proposal would serve the interests of both the people and the state far better than the existing capital model.
He claimed that instead of “destroying the lives of five lakh people,” the government should focus on developing a decentralized capital region under the Mavigun proposal.
The YSRCP leader alleged that ordinary farmers were being deceived in the name of land pooling and capital construction, while influential individuals close to Chandrababu Naidu were receiving preferential treatment.
The former minister questioned the allotment of land to Naidu in the E6 road area, alleging that Naidu was constructing a huge palace on nearly five acres of land purchased from a Kancherla family.
He sought to know why plots were allotted in 2024 and later purchased by Chandrababu Naidu in 2025.
He asked how Naidu managed to obtain land located between key government institutions such as the Secretariat, Assembly and High Court, while ordinary farmers were allegedly denied similar opportunities.
He further accused the government of declaring green belt zones around Naidu’s residence to prevent others from residing nearby.
According to Perni Nani, several farmers who surrendered land during the first phase of land pooling are yet to receive plots, while lands are allegedly being distributed to political loyalists.
Nani warned that construction activity in Amaravati could come to a halt again if heavy rains lead to water stagnation in June.
He demanded clarity from the government on when farmers would receive their promised plots.
He also alleged that lands belonging to farmers unwilling to participate in the second phase of land pooling were being placed under prohibited lists.
Reiterating YSRCP’s opposition to the second phase of land pooling, Perni Nani warned that if the government forcibly acquires land, a future YSRCP government would return those lands to farmers.
