Even as the Planning Commission reportedly rejected granting special category status to Seemandhra (now Andhra Pradesh State) as was promised by the previous UPA government, Telangana Rashtra Samithi president and Telangana Chief Minister K K Chandrasekhar Rao came out with the proposal seeking similar status to Telangana State.

KCR moved a resolution to this effect in the State Assembly on Saturday, The House passed the resolution seeking special category status for nine out of 10 districts of Telangana.

The Chief Minister contended that nearly 85% of the SC, ST, BC and minority communities living in all districts of Telangana, except Hyderabad, were backward and therefore, he requested the Centre to grant special status to each of these nine districts.

Interestingly, Telangana fits into the status, as per the Planning Commission norms, whereas Seemandhra does not. And if the Planning Commission grants the status, it would only be rubbing salt on the wounds of Seemandhra people.

May be it is time AP chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu and union minister M Venkaiah Naidu do some hard work to get the status to AP.
