Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan is earning appreciation for focusing on a long-term vision for the Godavari region, something that goes far beyond temporary development linked only to Pushkaralu events.
Traditionally, the Rajahmundry region witnesses major development activity once every 12 years during Godavari Pushkaralu.
Roads are repaired, ghats are beautified, and pilgrim facilities are upgraded for the massive influx of devotees.
However, Pawan Kalyan now appears to be thinking beyond the conventional approach. He recently emphasized that pilgrim facilities and ghats should not be limited to Rajahmundry alone.
Instead, infrastructure must be expanded across the entire Godavari river belt so that the burden of huge crowds does not fall on one city. This is a visionary idea that deserves praise.
During the 2015 Godavari Pushkaralu, former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu developed Rajahmundry extensively and improved many facilities.
But the overwhelming crowds also exposed the limitations of concentrating everything in one location. The tragic stampede during the event became a painful lesson for the state administration.
Keeping those memories in mind, Pawan Kalyan’s broader and more advanced approach looks both practical and people-centric.
Equally encouraging is his focus on the growing pollution in the Godavari River caused by industrial waste and sewage discharge.
His decision to examine the issue seriously and take responsibility for stricter checks gives hope to the people of the Godavari districts.
As the representative of Pithapuram, a constituency closely connected to the Godavari region, Pawan Kalyan has a historic opportunity before him.
If he succeeds in reviving the river from pollution and expands facilities across the Godavari belt, he could be remembered alongside Sir Arthur Cotton for his contribution to the region’s future.
A resident of Dowleswaram in East Godavari district, pointing at the statue of Sir Arthur Cotton, remarked, “Sir Arthur Cotton gave direction to the Godavari River by building the Dowleswaram Barrage, which made this entire region fertile and prosperous and also prevented floods. Now, Pawan Kalyan is working on making the Godavari river pollution-free and also building infrastructure. If he succeeds, he will be remembered on par with Arthur Cotton.”
