A 26-year-old Indian man, Nithyanand Reddy Gannu, died days after suffering severe injuries in a road accident in Detroit.
The accident occurred on July 18 while Reddy, known as Nandhu among his friends, was riding a two-wheeler. He was hit by a car and sustained multiple serious injuries, including a major fracture that required emergency surgery.
Following the accident, he developed a rare and life-threatening condition known as cerebral fat embolism.
According to his family and friends, the condition occurs when fat droplets from a fractured bone enter the bloodstream and travel to the brain, causing multiple clots and severe neurological damage.
His friends launched an online fundraiser to help cover his medical expenses.
“Our dear friend, Nithyanand Reddy Gannu, is a kind, hardworking and caring 26-year-old from a farming family whose life changed after a devastating accident,” the fundraiser stated.
Doctors later declared him brain dead, while he remained on life support.
The appeal said his family initially hoped that the emergency surgery would be the first step towards recovery. However, his condition worsened after he developed cerebral fat embolism.
Reddy was treated in the Intensive Care Unit and placed on a ventilator under the supervision of trauma specialists, neurosurgeons, orthopaedic surgeons and critical care doctors.
His friends gathered at the hospital on July 23 to mark his birthday while he remained unconscious. Hours later, he was declared dead.
Reddy was from Telangana’s Nirmal district. He moved to the United States three years ago to pursue a course in Emergency Medical Services.
He had recently completed his studies, secured a job and was living in Detroit at the time of the accident.
